The Eight Stages of Writing Shorthand

"...of the eight operations required to write an outline, seven are mental and only the eighth is physical. All these processes are going on simultaneously, even when writing from very slow dictation. At 30 words per minute, they are happening once every two seconds; at 60, once a second; at 120, twice; and at 180 they are happening three times a second. It will therefore be obvious that, since the brain has to be trained to react very quickly, the job has to be done slowly at first, gradually speeding up as the dictation practice continues with each lesson."
